This is church

In Bill Hybel’s great book, “Axiom”, he wrote a chapter called “This is church”. In that chapter, Hybels describes how there is the jobs or tasks that a pastor does, but the defining moments are the interruptions- the husband who needs marital counseling, the mourning mother, or the child who asks a simple question about…

Welcome to JoelHalpin.com

I’ve redone my blog so that it makes a little more sense to me.  I have a few main interests that I like to write about, so I’ve created some categories to organize them.  I enjoy talking about the UFC (and other sports),History/Politics and Religion.  The primary reason I have a blog is because I think…

Losing our religion

CNN recently reported the most obvious news story I can think of.  Here is the post. The most interesting part of the story to me is that “…according to the poll, 75% of Americans said it the country would be better off if it was more religious.” In America, following Jesus is one of the…

My 40 Day Fast- Being content

The temptations of my youth are still present in my life, (though to a much smaller degree and I don’t fall into them often).  My joy in life is often consumed by my desires for more.  My appetites control me. Over the past few weeks, the fast has  allowed me to focus on being content…

My 40 Day fast- Is it safe?

I’ve had many people that have shown concern for such a long fast.  Most people can’t conceive of 40 days without food.  In reality, it is quite safe when done correctly. First of all, This is not the 1st time I’ve fasted.  In fact, I have fasted regularly for about 10 years.  Last year I…

My 40 Day Fast (Intro)

For this is the will of God, your sanctification…that each of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor.               1 Thess. 4:4 Some versions say that we should be capable to “possess our vessel”.  In my opinion, this is among the hardest challenges that…

My First Sermon (video)

This week, I am preaching on 2 Kings 6.  That reminded me of the first sermon I ever preached.  So here is a Throwback Thursday for you. Thanks to 25 year old Joel.

Some random thoughts on the English language

I’m not perfect, but here are a few things that should be noted about the phrases we use: Reiterate is redundant.  Iterate means to say again. Forte is pronounced “fort”.  Forte is a french musical term Irony deals with opposites, not coincidence.  “If Barry Bonds statistics were the same as his father’s, it isn’t ironic”…

A New Office!

Last week my wife asked me when we should get Annie’s room ready.  We’re in 2 years into our adoption journey, so I haven’t been in a hurry to make any major changes.  This time, however, felt different.  Instead of wondering, this see So I decided to start moving my stuff out of my former…

SOUR GRAPES ARE ATTACKING YOU

(I’ve added this new tag to my blog in order to shorten my sermons, yet still proclaim important ideas that I want to say.  So this post will directly correlate to a shorter sermon on Sunday.  You are welcome) Sour Grapes are attacking you.  You will not succeed because of sour grapes.  The term sour…

Unleash!

We are about to complete my favorite sermon series that I’ve ever preached.  The basis of the series is that we must unleash ourselves from bad believes (and change our worldview) if we want to unleash ourselves from bad decisions. Here are the main ideas from the series so far. 1.  Your purpose in life…

10 Years Old!

My oldest son turned 10 years old.  We celebrated by making him wear a chicken hat and dance.  I think this has hit Erica and I hard and has made us more determined to be even more intentional in shaping him over the next 10 years.  He is an awesome kid.

Our first Community Partner

Now that we are moved into our new location, we have begun to think beyond our own walls at Connection Point Church.  Our goal at CPC is to become a valuable church in our community.  Today, Joey and I met with the Child Advocacy Center of Plano to establish our first “COMMUNITY PARTNER”.  A Community…

What movie are you livin’?

Here is our second sermon from the series, “Unleash!”.  This might be my favorite sermon that I’ve ever preached.  (I’m not saying it was actually preached the best, but the content is very helpful, in my opinion) 2.17 from Connection Point Church on Vimeo.

Be Unleashed!

Here is our opening sermon from our new series UNLEASH!  This might be my favorite series that we’ve ever done! Unleash – Week 1 from Connection Point Church on Vimeo.

One month of 2013 is in the books!

Now that we’ve jumped into the new year, I’ve begun to try to evaluate where we are at according to our metrics and where we are going. Our numbers are trending up, though they are still lower than this time last year.  Actually our numbers are identical to last year, except that we no longer…
